Interesting Facts
- "The Lowell Chamber of Commerce was formed around 1957 to act as a central body for the community.
- The Chamber is pledged to stimulate progress of the community."
- In 1963…"The town population was approximately 2,400." "The citizens of Lowell voted to adopt a Metropolitan Police System which went into effect in January 1972…" -" Lowell Indiana" booklet printed in the 1970's for the Lowell Chamber of Commerce.
- The first house in Lowell was a log cabin built by Samuel Halstead in 1835.
- Lowell was incorporated in 1852 by Melvin A. Halsted. In 1848 Halsted began building his home at the corner of Halsted and Main Streets. His home was the first brick house in Lake County and was built after discovering a deposit of clay, appropriate for making bricks, in his mill site. It is now the Halsted House Museum.
- Lowell has been the site of several fire disasters - the Fire of Oct 4, 1898, leveled the entire row of frame buildings on the North side of Commercial Ave. from Mill Street going east to the Mansion of Dr. Bacon
- On May 22, 1952 a 69- car Monon Railroad express freight train derailed and 6 cars of denatured alcohol exploded.
- On Oct 26, 1985 fire destroyed The Livery Stable, a long time Antique Mall.
- GYPSY the COW. National record breaking milk producing Holstein is buried at the edge of the former Pleasant View Farm on Belshaw road. Her grave is surrounded by a white picket fence.
- April 4, 2003 The Lowell Commercial Historic District, 305-519 E. Commercial Ave and 108-110 Clark Street, was placed on The National Register of Historic Listings.
- Lowell business community boasts it's designation as "Best in the Midwest" Rand McNally Midwest Travel guide June 2007. Included in this prestigious title is The Buckley Homestead, Inn Town Bed and Breakfast, The Davis Store and Tish's Antiques.
- Shopping includes antiques, jewelry and gift shops. You can experience lunch in an 1800's mansion, lunch or dinner in other fine restaurants throughout Lowell. Visit one of our many parks, view the stars at the conservatory or plan your trip around one of our many events-including Indiana's oldest Labor Day Parade.
